OVERVIEW

The notion of a university for industry was first mooted in the late 1990s as recognition of the need for lifelong learning was gaining credence in policy circles.

In 1998 ufi was formed with the explicit task of creating a demand for learning amongst the adult population. It was also charged with commissioning appropriate online learning materials that would appeal especially to people who were out of the habit of learning or who had specific literacy and numeracy needs.

The consumer facing name for this new service was learndirect and alongside the specially commissioned learning resources a network of ICT learning centres was set up in a range of locations including community centres, workplaces and libraries. Until 2008 learndirect also ran the national adult careers service.
