OVERVIEW

Repurposing is the act of taking a piece of content created with one aim in mind and making use of it for a different purpose or in a new context.

Contexts for repurposing

In the context of digitisation, online learning objects held Repositories may be re-used or repurposed (IPR conditions permitting) across or beyond an institution. An example might be a digital object that is created to support teaching and learning in a maths class can also be used in to support an engineering module, where maths is part of the curriculum.

Similarly outside an educational setting, where relevant Creative Commons licences are granted by the rightsholder, users can download, mix, re-use or share digital objects for work or leisure purpose and make these new works available under appropriate licence too.

Copyright

In all cases of repurposing users should verify Copyright. The IPR and licensing toolkit will provide further advice and guidance, as will the diagnostic tools provided by Web2rights.
