OVERVIEW


PLANETS is a four year programme co-funded under the EU 6th framework regarding digital preservation and long term access requirements. Its supporting consortium includes universities, national libraries and archives as well as private sector technology partners. Its aim is to increase European capacity for long term preservation of and access in perpetuity to digital information. This includes scientific and cultural data.


Members of the PLANETS Consortium


The PLANETS Consortium is lead by the British Library. Other members are:

What PLANETS will do


The PLANETS project began in 2006 and its aim is to provide different types and sizes of organisation with the tools for planning and execution of digital preservation. It is recognised that individual and organisations now have substantial digital records with less focus until now having been given to obsolescence as formats evolve. PLANETS will provide the means for the following:

  • Preservation planning
  • Tools and ways to describe digital objects
  • Tools for the retrospective conversion of digital objects
  • A framework for interoperability
  • A testbed to gather evidence for the development of suitable protocols, tools and preservation plans
  • A dissemination programme to ensure vendor understanding and take up
