OVERVIEW

Michael (Multilingual Inventory of Cultural Heritage in Europe) is a database of digital collections and resources relating to cultural heritage. The database is available in 16 languages and can be browsed by the following features:

  • Subject of the collection or resource
  • Spatial coverage of the collection or resource
  • Date or period
  • Institution type
  • Institution name
  • Audience type

The vision of the Michael project was for people to be able to search and explore cultural heritage from across Europe via the Internet.

The technology behind Michael

Michael was built using a standard platform and shared data model, which contributors could use over the Internet. This comprised:

  • A production module allowing contributors to add or modify information about cultural heritage objects. This information is stored in an XML database.
  • A publication module provides the browse and search interface to enable end-users to locate cultural heritage items. This interface uses an XML search and display engine, which can be modified to suit local need.

By bringing data about individual country's cultural heritage together it meant also that digitisation projects were aligned technically and this in turn ensured they were sustainable and interoperable to benefit citizens across Europe. It was also intended that the Michael data model be extensible for new collections and languages to be added in future.
