Activities
Helpdesk
Through our free helpdesk service we provide friendly bespoke answers (from brief emails to lengthy phone calls, dependent upon the requirements of the individual) to any media related question.
If we cannot answer an enquiry immediately, we will carry out further research, ensuring each enquiry is answered individually and in context within five working days. Answering enquiries can also involve testing software, hardware or workflow procedures, as well as consultation with other JISC services (e.g. JISC Legal) and other third parties.
Website
Our website is home to a wealth of advice and resources covering all aspects of the digital lifecycle. Regularly updated, our advice documents provide introductory and in-depth information on a wide range of subjects, including sourcing and using media in teaching materials, dealing with copyright issues, managing a digitisation project, photographic guidelines and choosing systems for managing digital media objects.
The website also includes a review of image, moving image and audio search engines, a discussion of metadata standards with links to pertinent sources, and useful links to a selection of appropriate publications, products, manufacturers and other organisations. The JISC Digital Media blog is regularly updated with comments and links to the latest digital media news.
Training
We operate a successful training programme of hands-on workshops at various venues around the UK, catering for all levels and covering a broad range of technical subjects including: digital photography, scanning, image copyright, audio production, digitising analogue video recordings and metadata. Further hands-on workshops are in development to support the FE/HE community needs regarding creating and using digital media objects. All workshops are run in small groups, allowing participants plenty of opportunity to discuss individual issues with tutors and other attendees. Each participant is supplied with an illustrated workbook to support the learning activities, providing them with detailed reference materials to take away.
Mailing List
The JISC Digital Media mailing list provides access to professionals working with images at all levels within the education and cultural sector communities. Anyone is eligible to join the list, share information and draw on the knowledge and practical experience of the 350+ members.
