OVERVIEW

i2010 is the EU policy framework," A European information society for growth and employment". Its aims are:

  • to create a Single European Information Space, which promotes an open and competitive internal market for information society and media services
  • to strengthen investment and innovation in ICT research
  • to support inclusion, better public services and quality of life through the use of ICT

Achievement of i2010 to 2008

The midterm review of the EU on the progress made against the above aims found that:

  • Europe has made great progress towards the networked economy, but needs to accelerate it efforts if it is to lead the transition to next-generation networks and simultaneously retain focus on minimising the digital divide.
  • Europe should take better advantage of the fact that it has the largest consumer market in the developed world; and use to foster and develop a European single market online
  • Research expenditure on ICT remains below target in most Member States. The review suggests more inter-state collaboration on this.
  • Public concerns about the pervasive nature of the Internet and their expectations are evolving. The market and policy makers need to take account of this in such a way that allows social and economic opportunities to flourish whilst reassuring consumers.

The review went on to make proposals to ensure that i2010 can address the points above whilst ensuring competitiveness and further ICT take-up across Member States.
