OVERVIEW

The Hindawi Publishing Corporation was chosen by Ithaka as a case study in Sustainability to demonstrate a real world example of a theoretical business model. These business models were outlined in the initial report by Kevin Guthrie, Rebecca Griffiths and Nancy Maron, Sustainability and Online Revenue Models: An Ithaka Report (May 2008).

Background

Hindawi Publishing Corporation is a Cairo-based for-profit publisher of science, technology, and medical journals, today publishing over 170 Open Access journals supported by an author-pays model. In addition to exploring this current revenue model, this case examines the process of transitioning to open access and the challenges inherent in building reputation for new journals.

The Hindawi business model is based on Article Processing Charges, paid by either the author or the author’s institution. As a new publisher, however, Hindawi has needed to develop a series of strategies for insuring that enough articles will come in each year to sustain its growth. Two main elements of this model include Hindawi’s strategy of launching new journals on a quick timescale and seeking partnerships. A robust marketing and business development staff researches new opportunities for open access journals, allowing Hindawi to launch up to eight new journals per month. These Community Journals are managed not by one central Editor-in-Chief, but by a group of several dozen editors, each of whom takes responsibility of the submissions that deal with his area of expertise. This method of new journal development has made it possible for Hindawi to quickly test the waters in what they see as areas for growth. In addition, more narrowly focused Special Issues provide a means to generate interest around specific sub-topics and to encourage community participation from leaders in the field.

Hindawi has also joined forces with more well-established societies and publishers. These affiliations allow Hindawi to benefit from the reputations of these organisations, and give the societies and publishers the benefit of Hindawi’s online publishing platform, as well as its very efficient editorial workflow system.
