Overview
There can be no generalised solutions to the question of what revenue model (or models, a combination of one or more may be most appropriate) to choose. Certainly in the case of sales, sponsorship and advertising there are likely to be potential conflicts with the non-profit nature of the host institution. It will be equally important to consider the users of the collection - will they be put off by advertisements or object to the sale of content?
The Ithaka report [link] suggests that the first place to start is to develop a set of criteria against which to evaluate revenue options. These criteria may include:
_ Alignment with the mission of the project: Can we implement this model in a way that is consistent with our core values and mission? _ Fit with the project staff’s capabilities and strengths: Do we have the ability to implement this model? _ Demands on staff time and focus: Will implementing this model distract us from the activities that are core to our mission? _ Investment requirements: Do we have the resources to implement this model? _ Level of risk: Can this model be implemented with an acceptable level of risk to our finances and reputation? _ Ancillary benefits: Would this model enhance our reputation or create opportunities to deepen relationships with key constituents?
