OVERVIEW

The JISC funded Strategic Content Alliance CenturyShare project, (Sep 08 – Mar 09), evolved from the BBC MemoryShare concept of providing timeline based access to content from across disparate trusted sources. The project has resulted in over 60,000 items of content from 16 diverse sources, from across the creative industries, culture heritage and education, (such as the Visual Arts Data Service, The British Film Institute, Hansard and regional Screen Archives and Museums; as well as the BBC Archive), being brought together to test related technical and policy issues and show the potential of offering standards based single point access to a range of primary source material that is ideal for diverse business, research and informal and formal learning needs. In all, the project illustrates, through rapid prototyping, how collaborative SCA ventures could add further value to the investments made in digital content services, by joining up resources, including content and skills, to meet common strategic, policy and operational goals.

The metadata will be ingested, stored and ordered within the Information Environment Service Registry, "the UK's free catalogue of electronic resources" managed by the University of Manchester. It is envisaged that this repository be searchable by one or more of the following characteristics:

  • specific date
  • span of dates
  • collection name
  • holding institution
