OVERVIEW
BBC Innovation Labs are week-long residential workshops for up to ten teams (of three people each) that took place in 2008 across the UK and are co-funded by the BBC and regional media development partners (e.g. Screen Yorkshire; Enterprise Scotland). At the Labs BBC commissioning teams work with local new media and TV (vision) production companies to develop the latter's ideas in response to BBC briefs.
The best ideas to emerge from each regional or national meeting are funded through prototype to full production. Labs are said to be IP neutral which means that the production company retains their intellectual property rights, after a closed three month option for the BBC, if the idea is finally produced elsewhere.
What is the aim of the BBC Innovation Lab?
To hothouse the creation and development of ideas by bringing producers and BBC commissioners together and to fast track the best ideas into production once the Labs are over. The Labs also provide new media companies with access to BBC expertise and related business development support.
What are the pre-requisites of the BBC Innovation Lab?
Teams must submit their ideas in advance and if selected to attend, come with a prototype to illustrate their idea - this can be a wireframe or as simple as a series of visual slides.
