OVERVIEW
The 4iP - 4 Innovation for the Public - fund was launched in autumn 2008 by Channel 4 and signalled a shift in Channel 4's activity from being primarily a broadcaster to engaging in "public service media" involving partnerships and co-production.
About 4iP fund
Channel 4 is seeking to work with producers and new media production companies to invest in new and sustainable ideas for digital media platforms (including mobile, gaming and online). The 4iP fund consists of up to £20 million to be spent over three years of its initial and pilot phase. Matched funding from Channel 4's partners brings the total fund of up to £50 million. Commissioning managers for the fund will be based across the UK.
The 4iP fund invites submissions of any size whose idea fits it criteria, although partnership is a key credential for all bids. Funding can also be sought for development work.
Criteria for submission to the 4iP fund
The following criteria are applied when considering applications to the fund:
- Will it deliver 4’s public purposes?
- Will it stir things up in 4-like fashion?
- Does it meet a user need? Does it scratch an important itch?
- Is it 100% native to digital networks, with its centre of gravity in participation or collaboration?
- Can it thrive without ongoing financial support from 4iP
- Can it thrive without cross promotion from TV channels?
A project which has already been funded is the School of Everything and a series of meetings and related events are planned.
