OVERVIEW

Staff are the vital ingredient in a successful [content creation programme and assembling a team with the right spread of skills and experience needs careful thought. Your business plan and project plan will identify the range of tasks, roles and responsibilities envisaged and from this it should be possible to draw up job descriptions and to decide how many posts you will need for each role.

Roles and responsibilities

You will need core posts to cover:

  • Project management to ensure the smooth running of the whole project and its delivery according to schedule and budget
  • Technical management to look after all the systems and software requirements
  • Processing such as digitisation and documentation
  • Day-to-day administration so that the office runs smoothly

The number of staff will depend on the scale of the work.

Training

An active programme of staff training should be built into the project plan which will ensure that the team have the skills they need to do their jobs and that they are refreshed as necessary. As well as the induction training for new staff, each member of staff should have a training plan related to the skills required for their work. Specialist training in the techniques of digitisation and understanding the requirements of different media should be provided as should a thorough grounding in the creation and management of metadata. If staff are to be writing material for the website, then training in the techniques of writing for the web will be useful.
