1. Introduction

This section is intended to support those who contribute articles to Digipedia.

Digipedia has been designed to bring together in one place authoritative resources (standards, policies, case studies, good practice and links to expertise) on all aspects of managing digital content.  It uses tried and tested Wiki technology for its ease of maintenance, cost-effective sustainability and the ability to build and sustain communities of interest. The service is both gazetteer of topics and terms and also structured guidance through the digital content lifecycycle relevant to particular needs and levels of experience.

2. Contributing to Digipedia

You will have been invited to become a contributor to Digipedia for an agreed range of topics and should now have a User ID and Password which will give you access to the editorial functions of the Wiki pages and the Digipedia members area.  If you do not yet have an editor’s ID and password, please contact xxxxxx.

3. Creating and/or editing a topic page

All the topic pages employ standard Wiki editing techniques which can be found at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents. These guidelines should be followed for all topic page creation and editorial activities.

4. Before you start

Before you create a topic page, please make sure that it does not already exist by browsing the A – Z list and by searching for the topic.

5. Topic page template

Please use the following template for each topic page you create.  This will ensure a consistent look and feel for Digipedia:

5.1 Page Title:

Use only a capital letter for the first word and any proper names in the title.  For example: Metadata: an introduction, or Strategic Content Alliance.

5.2 Contents box:

This will be created automatically as you build your page, in accordance with standard Wiki practice.

5.3 Section and sub-section headings:

Each first level section heading will be at Heading 2 followed by two carriage returns and then a single line underneath.  The first heading will always be OVERVIEW (in caps as here).

Sub-sections will be at the next level down and do NOT have a single line underneath.

All sections and sub-sections are separates by carriage return, page break mark, carriage return.

At the end of the text you have created, a further three sections are to be added as follows:

5.4 Related Digipedia articles: please list in A – Z order other topic pages in Digipedia which are of relevance.

5.5 Further information: again in A – Z order, this section may include links to relevant material outside Digipedia such as websites, periodical articles, podcasts.

5.6 Harvested links to other resources:  please choose one or more of the following RSS strings to harvest relevant material on the fly from external souces.  Take care in choosing the keyword you insert at the indicated place in the string.

6. Categories:

These are created using standard Wiki mark up. You may choose from the following categories list.  Please always use at least one from list A as these are top-level categories.  You may supplement from list B where appropriate.

6.1 Category list A

  • Creating
  • Describing
  • Discovering
  • Evaluating
  • Managing_content
  • Planning
  • Preserving
  • Using_and_re-using

6.2 Category list B

  • Accessibility
  • Advisory_bodies
  • Audience_research
  • Business_modelling_and_sustainability
  • Case_studies
  • Collection_development
  • Decision_support
  • Demand_and_usability
  • Intellectual_property
  • Management_processes
  • Policies_and_strategies
  • Standards_and_formats
  • Technical_processes

You are welcome to create new terms for List B

7. Semantic mark up for topic pages:

Using the wizard in Rich Editor mode, select from the drop-down list appropriate roles, goals and levels for the topic page.  These will be used to return relevant materials against Knowledge Pathway structured queries by Digipedians.

Once you have selected your terms, return to standard editing mode and encase the terms in pre-formatting mark-up, making sure that you break lines to keep the text to page width.

8. Creative Commons licence

All topic pages for Digipedia will be created using a CC-BY licence.  If you have a particular reason for wanting to employ a different CC licence for a given topic page, then this must be agreed with xxxxxx.  A statement to that effect should appear at the head of the article.

9. Image uploads

These are done from the Upload Image link at the LH margin of the page.  Images can be added to pages as appropriate, using standard Wiki mark up. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images gives further details.

10. Example page

==OVERVIEW==

The assessment of how well used your digital content is and how satisfied your users feel are essential steps in the digital content life cycle. Evaluation is an activity which informs development of a service and helps its managers to understand the value and impact the service is having on its users, answering the “What difference has it made?” question.

Evaluation helps with quality assessment, benchmarking, business planning and understanding users’ needs. It should be an activity that is built in to all phases of a project and is a regular activity for established services. It is an essential component of [[Audience analysis and modelling|audience research]] The [http://www.evaluationtrust.org/evaluation/definitions Evaluation Trust] defines evaluation as “the assessing and judging the value of a piece of work, an organisation or a service. Its main purpose is to help an organisation reflect on what it is trying to achieve, assessing how far it is succeeding, and identify required changes”

There are two main evaluation activities:

*Formative evaluation which is used throughout the life of a project to assess progress at key points so that changes can be made to next steps in the light of the findings, if necessary

*Summative evaluation which looks at the impact of the entirety of the project and informs future developments.

Both use two main methods:

*Quantitative evaluation which measures the use of the content in various ways
*Qualitative evaluation which looks at the impact on users of the service

Getting a feel for the amount of use your content is getting, which parts of the service are most used and where users are coming from will help you build an overall picture of the use of the service.

Understanding the impact of your content on its users is essential to planning for the future. Qualitative evaluation as you build your content will help fine tune the end product and continuing qualitative evaluation exercises regularly will make sure that you have a good range of feedback which will inform service development.
